BISS Encryption BISS Types BISS Key

BISS

Introduction

Basically we receive two types of channels from satellite feed. These are Scrambled Channels and FTA Channels. We can see free of cost FTA channels in our satellite receiver while in case of scrambled channels we need to use authorized decoder or keys to decode scrambled channels.

In this article we will discuss about What is BISS_Encryption and BISS_Keys,

What Is BISS

BISS stands for Basic Interoperable Scrambling System.  BISS is used to scramble the satellite signal. BISS System was developed by the EBU and some hardware manufactures.  Where EBU stands for European Broadcasting Union.

Scrambled channels are based on Propriertary Encryption Method for example PowerVu.  PowerVu keys can only be entered in PowerVu supported satellite receivers. So this type of encryption is product specific. On the other hand BISS is a Open Platform Encryption System. Because it can be used on different manufacture’s Satellite Receivers.

BISS Encryption provides a BISS_Key to authorized users or organizations. Which they need to enter in their satellite receiver. After entering this key in the satellite receiver it start to unscramble the channels for that particular BISS_Key. The BISS_Key is a private key allocated to authorized users only. The service providers changes the BISS_Key time to time for security reasons.

BISS Encryption Types

There are basically two types of BISS Encryption System mentioned below,

BISS 1

This is 12 digit Hexadecimal key generally known as Session Key. This key is already decided by service provider and user. So it is entered in both devices encoder and decoder. So the receiver which have the exact key will be able to unscramble the channels successfully.

BISS E

It is known as Basic Interoperable Scrambling System Encryption. It is 16 digit hexadecimal session key. This key is entered by authorized person even user do not know about this key.

BISS Key Examples

Below mentioned BISS_keys are just Examples of BISS_Key only,  used for education purpose only,

A1 B1 C1 D1 EE FF GG HH

1A 1B 1C 1D AA BB CC DD

Conclusion

Basic Interoperable Scrambling System is used to scramble the satellite signals to deliver services to authorized users only.  It is 16 digit hexadecimal code entered in the different manufacture’s satellite receivers to deliver services. A service provider have rights change this key time to time.
