When the things comes in terms of Transmission of digital audio video signals then there are various type of transmission standard take place like SDI signal , HDMI signal and IP signal etc.

What Is SDI And SDI Signal

SDI stands for Serial Digital Interface. SDI is a standard used for the transmission of Digital Video over the coaxial cable. SDI signal is full bandwidth uncompressed signal that can carried out on single cable. This is 75 ohm coaxial cable. The data transfer speed for this coaxial cable is 270 Mbps. Maximum distance for digital signal transmission for SDI cables is 300 feet. If distribution is good for the transmission of SDI signals then it can transmit the signal thousands feet long.

There are several standards like HD-SDI , 3G-SDI and 6G-SDI. The difference between these standards are of bitrates and video formats only.

A SDI signal can contain maximum four  digital audio video signal. It passes the uncompressed signal. There is loss in data to reach the signal from source to destination due to interference and noise. These losses can be recovered by using the Hamming Code.

For the transmission of HD content in best way HD-SDI was developed by the broadcasting industry. HD-SDI did not use the HDCP while HDMI uses HDCP. Where HDCP stands for Hight bandwidth Digital Content Protection. The data transfer rate for HD-SDI is high.

BNC connectors are used for  transmission of SDI signal. HD-SDI can carry time code in a signal cable.

Things like flexibility , quality , speed , cost , distance and time code are concerned then we need to use HD-SDI cable.

Serial Digital Interface Cable Types

There are different kinds of MX SDI cables like,

MX 3116 It is digital RG-59 cable. it is single standard copper wire.

MX 3117 It is multi standard copper wire.

MX 3118 It is flexible cable. It is multi standard copper.

MX 3105 SDI cable with OCC Copper.

Conclusion

SDI standard is used professionally for Digital Headends. SDI cables are more convenient than the HDMI cables. SDI cables are cheaper than the HDMI cables also. A standard BNC connector is used on both ends of this cable also a mini BNC connector can be used instead of it. The benefits of BNC connectors is that it locks on the ports so cable can not pull out easily.
